Short Description

In this tucked away corner of Uruguay is the home of the world's 'Best Tannat'. It's also know at the 'Painted Birds Region'. If you're a lover of red wines and are looking for something a bit different, take a closer look at this four day private tour.

The main attraction in this area is known as the Corridor of the Painted Birds, a poetic name for a magical place. Here you are invited to discover the Uruguay River and to be inspired by the region’s beautiful landscapes and people. What you will find is a great combination of unique gastronomy, hot springs and great wines - a perfect description of the region! Located in the northwest of the country along the Uruguay River, which forms a natural border with neighbouring Argentina, the soil in this area has a different composition to other areas. Owing to this and as well as the warm and humid climate, most of the wines produced here are table wines, however it is also the original home of the “Tannat” in Uruguay.

Day One
We start off at the Salto where you will be greeted by your guide and driven to the hotel where you’ll have some free time. Before lunch we will visit the city of Salto. On this tour you will learn about the architecture, art and history surrounding the town squares as well as visiting museums, the basilica and the only theatre remaining in the city. We will end the tour in the historical place of Ayui, famous for being the last camp of our national hero, General Artigas. We’ll have lunch in Salto and afterwards we’ll begin our tour of the wineries. First off we will visit Salto Chico, small only by name (chico means small, however it refers to the river that runs there), a very well-known and exclusive bodega. We will taste their wines and then continue on to our next stop, Bertolini and Broglio, producers of Tannat Exotic Senza. This Tannat was awarded the title of ‘Best Tannat in the World’ at the Tannat of the World awards, an event supervised they the International Organisation of Wines and Vines (OIV) and the International Association of Oenologues (UIOE). It competed against some 140 wines which were tasted by professionals from Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and France. After a full day of new flavours and experiences, we will return to our hotel. Free time and nights accomodation at the hotel.

Day Two
After breakfast and hotel checkout, we’ll head south for our first stop; Bodega Leonardo Falcone. This winery produces high quality varieties, especially reds of French origin, but particularly stand out for their iconic Tannat. Other varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Marselan, Syrah and Chardonnay. The region has the peculiarity of calcareous clay soils, typical of Paysandú and this is directly reflected in the wines. We’ll enjoy a wine tasting at the Bodega and then continue our journey towards the magnificent “Estancia de la Paz “ (the peace estancia). This place is a perfect symbiosis of the traditions held by the different families who have lived there over generations, giving it a very special atmosphere. Here it is easy to forget the time of day, relax and free yourself from daily stress. You’ll always find a corner at Estancia La Paz where you’ll feel truly comfortable. For the rest of the afternoon you are free to enjoy the area. Dinner at the estancia’s restaurant and nights accommodation.

Day Three
After breakfast you are invited to relax and enjoy the spa, complete with sauna, jacuzzi and a selection of massages, facial and body treatments and other alternative therapies (Spa not included in price, additional costs apply). We will have lunch and in the afternoon enjoy a horseback ride around the area where you will be able to see different types of birds, Charolais cows, flowers, plants and native trees. The horse ride will be guided by the foreman of La Paz and if you wish, can include a picnic next to the water. At night, we’ll have our farewell dinner at the famous La Pulpería restaurant (transfers included). Accommodation in Estancia La Paz.
