Short Description

Nowhere else in the world can you experience a wine and precious gemstone tour in the same region! This is an extraordinary combination of fine interests, on this three day guided tour.

In the north of Uruguay, on its limits with Brazil and its famous wine region of Campanha, are the provinces of Artigas and Rivera. Good soil drainage and warmer temperatures here allow for better maturation of the grape. As a result, the region adapts particularly well to Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a new wine region which brings different historical and cultural points of view to vine cultivation in Uruguay.

Day One
Reception on arrival at Minas de Corrales where you will meet your guide and then be taken to your hotel. The morning is free for your choice of activities followed by lunch at the Hotel Artigas. During the afternoon, we’ll immerse ourselves in the history surrounding the 19th century Gold Rush in Northern Uruguay. This guided tour will give you all the details of gold extraction in the very places that it happened. We will visit the town of Santa Ernestina, were you can appreciate the first underground galleries, now 130 years old. We’ll also visit the first hydroelectric dam of South America, located on the “Cuñapirú” stream and which generated hydro mechanical energy for the gold processing plant. We will discover all the details of the process right through from stone to ingot. Then we will get to know the new process of modern extraction at the current refinery. Afterwards, we’ll return to our hotel for dinner. Night at Hotel Artigas.

Day Two
After breakfast and hotel check out, we’ll head north towards our first stop, “Bodega 636”. This family winery was born from a love of terroirs and their fruits. Here artisanal and new technologies coexist in a great modern winemaking process. They also believe that small scale work always offers a better result. The soils where the vines are planted are amongst the highest quality in Uruguay and are at around 300m above sea level. We will enjoy an exclusive wine tasting provided by the winemaker himself, all whilst we appreciate the beauty of the place, so that we can leave with good memories in the direction of our second stop: “Cerro Chapeu”. This vineyard is situated at 10 km east of the bi-national city of Rivera-Livramento, a unique place which is also more than 300m above sea level. It's a spectacular location where we will find the highest vines in the country surrounded by flat hills, typical to eastern and northern Uruguay. This vineyard was built in 1997 and is one of the most innovative wineries in South America where the best oenologic technologies are developed in harmony with the environment. It is situated on the top of a hill, which allows for minimum manipulation of the musts thanks to gravity. The big house is surrounded by a huge terrace with amazing views of the vines and offers a unique atmosphere for our wine tasting. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy nature and a good glass of wine with friends. To close this experience, we’ll have a delicious lunch in the same location. Afterwards, if time allows, we can visit the city of Rivera and its animated streets before heading back on the two hour trip to Artigas. Rest of the afternoon free before meeting for a Brazilian dinner, typical of this border city. Night at the “Hotel Casino San Eugenio” in Artigas.

Day Three
After breakfast we invite you to discover the fascinating world of mining, touring Agates and Amethysts quarries. The tour takes us to the heart of the mining activity. Imagining ourselves as true miners, we embark on our expedition to the quarries, entering the tunnels built to extract huge and impressive amethyst geodes. We will also visit the quarry that was excavated by pioneers in the extraction of precious stones. In this semi-precious stone quarry we will be able to collect our own mineral samples and then enjoy an exclusive picnic. A wonderful place to get to know the most representative wines of the area and just relax. Once back in the city, we will visit an impressive workshop where we will learn about the process of cleaning, cutting, polishing and finishing beautiful collection pieces. We will also visit handicraft workshops where we will see the craftsmen carrying out their work. The tour concludes in Atigas
