Short Description

Uncover the lesser known, yet still wonderful, wine producers of Tuscany. This one off small group tour will see you departing from Florence and making your way leisurely through the vineyards to Rome. Taking in hilltop villages and ancient towns, highlighted by wine tastings and artisan visits along the way.

Our weeklong group departure focusses on visiting a selection of artisanal, small-scale Tuscan wine producers for tastings. Along the way we’ll visit the towns of Siena, Radda in Chianti, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino. Other highlights include two regional cuisine cooking classes, wine paired dinners and visits to local artisans making local produce.

Day 1 - 8 June 2019
Transfer from to il Castagno. Meet you tour leader and then check in, a light lunch will be served. After a rest a short drive will take us to Siena where we will meet our guide for a tour of the main attractions of the town. The tour will end in “Piazza del Campo”, the famous square where the Palio is run. We will enjoy watching the colorful crowd while sipping our “spritz”. Supper with paired wines in a local restaurant nearby.

Day 2 - 9 June 2019
After a leisurely breakfast we will start towards Monteriggioni. Along the way we will stop at the very old abbey of Abbadia Isola. Form here you may choose to hike for an hour to Monteriggioni, on the Francigena way. Those who do not wish to hike can go with the van. Monteriggioni is a walled town known for its medieval fortifications and watchtowers. The castle walls offer views of the surrounding Chianti region. We then depart for Felsina winery where we will have a visit of the cellar and a wine tasting/Lunch. The Felsina winery is an impressive blend of ancient vineyards, historic buildings and very modern and beautifully designed cellar. Return to the villa where supper will be served.

Day 3 - 10 June 2019
Transfer to San Gimignano through winding Chianti roads. Visit this beautiful town. Enjoy a late wine tasting lunch at Torraccia di Chiusi. Return to il Castagno via a different route. Make the most of some down time for a rest at the villa and prepare for a visit to Castel in Villa later in the day, the beautiful property of Princess Pignatelli. Return to il Castagno.

Day 4 - 11 June 2019
Transfer to San Biagio (the Church at Montepulciano foothills). Have some free time in town then meet at the main square to attend a wine tasting/lunch at Cantine de Ricci. The historical cellar is amazing. Have some more free time (Montepulciano has many enticing boutiques and is one of the best places to by souvenirs and gifts). We will then reach our new accommodation, on the southern slopes of Montalcino. Podere Brizio. Welcome drink, supper and night.

Day 5 - 12 June 2019
Transfer to a cheese making farm with a superb view of Pienza; there we will learn how goat cheeses are made and enjoy a tasty lunch. Pienza is a renaissance jewel, and you are well served by taking a stroll along its cheese shop lined streets. On the way back we will stop at Livio Sassetti, one of those great producers of Brunello, but who only a few know. After a tasting of his wines. (Livio is now old, but sometimes he feels well enough to join us at the tasting room, or he will say hello from his doorstep). We will check in at Podere Brizio and have supper with paired wines.

Day 6 - 13 June 2019
After a leisurely breakfast we will head for Orvieto, an ancient Etruscan and medieval town where we will stop for a tour and a wine-tasting/lunch at a cellar carved in the Tufo rock.
