Slovenia

Viticulture was present in Slovenia long before the Romans introduced grapes to France and Spain. The early celtic and Illyrian tribes were cultivating vines for production between the 5th and 4th Centuries BC, and the Blaufränkisch and Blauer Portugieser grape varieties have been found to have likely originated from the Styria region of modern Slovenia. Borrowing from its surroundings, Slovenian food does its own unique take on Balkan, Italian, Austrian and Hungarian cuisines. There are plenty of delicious dishes and mouth-watering wines to enjoy in Slovenia’s fairytale landscape—packed with terraced vineyards on hillsides, charming rustic villages, and placid lakes.
