India
India has a long winemaking history, with references to grape wines being found in chronicles from the 4th Century BC. Favoured by the privileged classes in India, wine took a dive when Indian vineyards were destroyed by phylloxera at the end of the nineteenth century. The industry saw a revival only in the 1980s, when new grape varieties were introduced. There are now many treasures to be found in India for the oenophile, including a visit to Nashik, the ‘wine capital of India’, and endless opportunities to visit sites of historical importance and indulge in Indian cuisine.
